  1. I'm interested in creating a wiki or podcast for my class; how do I get started?

If you intend to use the LiveDU service to create a wiki or podcast, you'll first need to download and complete the LiveDU Proposal Form here. Using this form, you'll not only be able to provide us with the basic information we need - such as your name and the intended course - the form will also allow you to articulate some of your objectives in using this technology. This will in turn allow our support staff to better understand your needs and offer suggestions where relevant. Of course, even before submitting the form, you are welcome to contact IT with any initial questions that you may have.

  2. Do I need to have a Macintosh computer in order to use the LiveDU service?

Recording a live video podcast is the only step which requires a Macintosh. When you record a video podcast, the IT department will deliver a "Podcast Kit" to your classroom which includes the necessary Macintosh laptop and an attached video camera. The laptop is very easy to use and does not require you to have had prior experience using a Macintosh. All other activities with LiveDU are platform independent.

  3. What kind of content can LiveDU deliver?

The LiveDU service can deliver the content-types listed below, either streamed from the web or downloadable via podcast:
    • Video - recorded from a camera into the LiveDU system
    • Audio - recorded from a microphone into the LiveDU system.
    • Screen Capture - Record on-screen operations (such as PowerPoint presentations or program demonstrations).
    • Pre-produced audio or video files - Media content created by other applications, such as Camtasia, then uploaded to LiveDU.

Note: Media files created in other applications must first be saved into the Quicktime format before uploading to the LiveDU system for distribution. Check your application's "Export" or "Save As..." menu items for this option.

  4. What do my students need in order to use LiveDU?

To view content created on LiveDU, end-user requirements are:
    • a computer running Windows, Mac OS or Linux (Pentium 3 or higher with 500MB RAM / Mac: G4 or higher with 500MB RAM)
    • Broadband internet access
    • Quicktime software for viewing video and audio. Available here for free.
If students are subscribing to a podcast they will also need:

All publicly available machines at DU meet these requirements.
  5. Where does LiveDU fit within Dominican University's IT Strategic Plan?

LiveDU is intended as a means of augmenting existing course structures. In particular, LiveDU fits with one of the stated objectives of the IT strategic plan by leveraging the web as a means of enhancing the exchange of ideas at Dominican.

  6. Can I use LiveDU with my course management system (Blackboard/MyDU)?

Yes. This is a simple matter of providing a link on your Balckboard/MyDU course page to your class' LiveDU Wiki page.

  7. I see that the Podcast Capture program for LiveDU can create podcasts from video, audio or a screen capture; can I utilizes a combination of these types within a single podcast?

It is possible to create a podcast using multiple sources. However, because this requires the use of video editing software (specifically, the skill-set required to use such software) information on creating content from multiple sources is presently outside the scope of a this tutorial site. Stay tuned to this site, though, for information on creating more complex podcasts!

  8. Why should I use LiveDU if I am already using Blackboard or MyDU?

The primary purpose of LiveDU is to allow for the creation and delivery of live video and audio, and to some extent to provide a collaborative environment as well through the use of the wiki/blogging feature. In that sense, its purpose is different than that of a learning management system such as Blackboard or MyDU.

  9. Who can see the material that I place on LiveDU?

You have a variety of options in regards to who can view or contribute to your LiveDU wiki. These options include granting viewing access to:

    • None other than yourself
    • A specific group of users, specified by you (such as your students or a committee's members)
    • Any user with a DU network account
    • Unrestricted viewing by the general public
As mentioned, in addition to being able to control who can see your content, you can dictate who has the ability to contribute content or make changes to your wiki.
  10. What do I need in order to view material that is hosted on a LiveDU wiki?

For the best experience using LiveDU, your computer should meet the following specifications:

    • Apple Quicktime software (available here as a free download for both Mac and Windows if you don't already have it)
